Just 6.5

A City Under Siege

Silence is sound too, if we listen well.

Still from Just 6.5 by Saeed Roustayi

In Just 6.5, Saeed Roustayi builds a story that looks simple on the surface: a relentless detective hunts a drug kingpin through Tehran's underworld.

Just 6.5 brought Iranian crime cinema of age. That sentence may be the best way into a film we have been discussing for years.

The performances are unshowy and exact. No moment is built to display skill; everything serves the people on screen. Perhaps that is why, years later, faces linger longer than lines.

The film doesn’t answer; it sharpens the question. The ending neither ties the knot nor abandons us—it sends us out with a question that walks us home.

On a second viewing, details surface that escaped us the first time: an object in the background, a pause, a repetition. The film is a house we enter through a different door each time.
